Objectives
- The student will be introduced to runway incursions and learn to recognize factors that cause them.
- The student will learn various tools and techniques for avoiding runway incursions.
Equipment
- Taxi Diagrams
- Chart Supplement (formerly "A/FD")
Instructor Actions
- Discuss the dangers of a runway incursion with an emphasis on general aviation runway incursion statistics
- Demonstrate how to perform a taxi brief with an emphasis on hot spots
- Discuss additional factors that can contribute to runway incursions such as sterile cockpit, night operations, low visibility, and nontowered airports
Student Actions
- Develop a plan for sterile cockpit with an emphasis on runway incursion avoidance
- Copy and read back simulated taxi instructions then perform a taxi brief
- Demonstrate how to find the reason for a given hot spot on an airport
Completion Standards
- Explain, in their own words, strategies for reducing the risk of runway incursions
- Demonstrate the ability to copy air traffic control taxi instructions
- Demonstrate situational awareness by adequately briefing the taxi plan
