Class D Airspace

Overview

Class D Airspace surrounds airports with predominantly general aviation traffic that have air traffic control towers. Because Class D airports do not have radar control authority, operations in Class D airspace are typically easy to learn. Class D airspace generally extends upward from the surface to 2,500 feet AGL at a radius of 4 NM, although this distance can vary. All aircraft inside class D airspace must be in contact with the local air traffic control tower.
