PAVE

Overview

With the PAVE checklist, pilots have a simple way to remember each category to examine for risk prior to each flight. By incorporating the PAVE checklist into preflight planning, the pilot divides the risks of flight into four categories which form part of a pilot's decision-making process.

  Description Example Risk Factors
P Pilot in command Overall experience, recency, IMSAFE
A Aircraft Performance factors, inoperative equipment, sufficient fuel capacity, avionics familiarity
V enVironment Weather, terrain, unfamiliar or busy airport, unfamiliar or busy airspace, night time
E External pressures "Get-there-itis", passenger desires, business needs, pride
