Pressure Altitude

Overview

Pressure altitude is the height above the standard datum plane. It has multiple uses ranging from aircraft performance calculations to defining specific flight levels in Class A airspace. Pressure altitude can easily be determined in an aircraft by adjusting the altimeter setting to 29.92” Hg.

Rules of Thumb

((altimeter setting - 29.92) x 1000) + current altitude = pressure altitude
