Overview
A Cold Front occurs when a mass of cold, dense air moves towards and replaces a body of warmer air. Because of the difference in air density, the colder air mass undercuts the warmer air as the cold front advances. The slope of a cold front is quite steep. Because the steep gradient undercuts and lifts the warmer, usually more humid air, there is a significant potential for clouds with significant vertical development. In many cases, especially from late Winter to early Summer, cold fronts are a primary cause for the severe weather outbreaks that are often seen in the southern part of the country.
