Lesson Plan
National Airspace System
Objectives
- The student will be introduced to the concept of airspace.
- The student will learn to interpret aeronautical charts to determine the vertical and horizontal extents of any selected airspace on the chart.
- The student will learn to apply regulations to determine the requirements for entering and operating in that airspace.

Instructor Actions
- Discuss the different classifications of airspace
- Distinguish various types of airspace on a sectional chart
- Demonstrate how to find information regarding special use airspace on the sectional chart margin
- Discuss VFR weather minimums for each class of airspace
Student Actions
- Idenfity types of airspace on a sectional chart and their vertical and horizontal extents
- Determine VFR weather minimums based on a given location and altitude on a sectional chart
Completion Standards
- Explain the requirements for basic VFR weather minimums and flying in particular classes of airspace.
- Correctly identify airspace and operate in accordance with associated communication and equipment requirements.
